Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 18 of 74

Question 18

MediumOriginal question

A function has f′(x)=(x−3)2(x−1)f'(x) = \left(x - 3\right)^{2} \left(x - 1\right). Find the interval(s) on which ff is strictly increasing.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. (x−3)2≥0\left(x - 3\right)^{2} \ge 0 always, so the sign of f′f' is the sign of x−1x - 1.

  2. f′>0f' > 0 for x>1x > 1 except at x=3x = 3, where it is 0 for an instant; a single such point does not stop ff from strictly increasing.

  3. So ff is strictly increasing on (1,∞)(1, \infty).

Worth noting

Stopping at x=3x = 3 treats a zero of a squared factor as a change of sign; it is not one.
