Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 64 of 74

Question 64

EasyOriginal question

For which values of aa (a>0a > 0, a≠1a \ne 1) is f(x)=axf(x) = a^{x} strictly decreasing on R\mathbb{R}?

Options for question 64

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=axlog⁡af'(x) = a^{x}\log a, and ax>0a^{x} > 0 always.

  2. So f′<0f' < 0 exactly when log⁡a<0\log a < 0, that is 0<a<10 < a < 1.

Worth noting

For a>1a > 1, log⁡a>0\log a > 0 and axa^{x} rises, like 2x2^{x}.
