Question 61

EasyOriginal question

If 5x+4(x+2)(x−1)=Ax+2+Bx−1\frac{5x + 4}{(x + 2)(x - 1)} = \frac{A}{x + 2} + \frac{B}{x - 1}, what is AA?

Options for question 61

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Multiply through: 5x+4=A(x−1)+B(x+2)5x + 4 = A(x - 1) + B(x + 2).

  2. Put x=−2x = -2: −6=−3A-6 = -3A, so A=2A = 2. (And x=1x = 1 gives B=3B = 3.)

Worth noting

3 is BB, the constant over x−1x - 1.
