Indefinite Integrals · Question 74 of 90

Question 74

EasyOriginal question

To evaluate ∫x2log⁡x dx\int x^2\log x\,dx by parts, which should be taken as uu, the function to differentiate?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. We cannot integrate log⁡x\log x easily, but we can differentiate it to 1x\frac{1}{x}, which cancels a power of xx.

  2. So u=log⁡xu = \log x and dv=x2 dxdv = x^2\,dx. The order Inverse trig, Logarithmic, Algebraic, Trigonometric, Exponential (ILATE) puts the logarithm before the algebraic factor.

Worth noting

With u=x2u = x^2, dv=log⁡x dxdv = \log x\,dx has to be integrated first, which is itself a by-parts problem.
