Question 31

HardOriginal question

What is the domain of cos⁡−1x+sec⁡−1x\cos^{-1} x + \sec^{-1} x?

Options for question 31

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. cos⁡−1x\cos^{-1} x needs −1≤x≤1-1 \le x \le 1; sec⁡−1x\sec^{-1} x needs x≤−1x \le -1 or x≥1x \ge 1.

  2. The sum needs both, and only the ends x=−1x = -1 and x=1x = 1 satisfy both: the domain is {−1,1}\{-1, 1\}.

Worth noting

∅\varnothing forgets that ±1\pm 1 belong to both domains: sec⁡−1\sec^{-1} leaves out only the open interval (−1,1)(-1, 1).
