Inverse Trigonometric Functions · Question 30 of 120

Question 30

HardOriginal question

What is the range of f(x)=tan⁡−1(x2)f(x) = \tan^{-1}\left(x^{2}\right)?

Options for question 30

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. x2x^{2} takes every value in [0,∞)[0, \infty), including 0 at x=0x = 0.

  2. tan⁡−1\tan^{-1} is increasing, so ff runs from tan⁡−10=0\tan^{-1} 0 = 0 up towards π2\frac{\pi}{2} without reaching it: [0,π2)\left[0, \frac{\pi}{2}\right).

Worth noting

[0,π2]\left[0, \frac{\pi}{2}\right] closes the top end, but tan⁡−1\tan^{-1} never reaches π2\frac{\pi}{2}, however large x2x^{2} is.
