Inverse Trigonometric Functions · Question 29 of 120

Question 29

HardOriginal question

What is the domain of cos⁡−1(x2−1)\cos^{-1}(x^{2} - 1)?

Options for question 29

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Each inverse function must get an input from its domain: −1≤x2−1≤1-1 \le x^{2} - 1 \le 1.

  2. So 0≤x2≤20 \le x^{2} \le 2, so −2≤x≤2-\sqrt{2} \le x \le \sqrt{2}.

Worth noting

[0,2]\left[0, \sqrt{2}\right] forgets that negative xx have the same square.
