Question 14

HardOriginal question

A=[aij]A = [a_{ij}] is a 3 × 3 matrix with aij=∣i−j∣a_{ij} = |i - j|. What is the sum of all its elements?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Element by element, A=[012101210]A = \begin{bmatrix}0 & 1 & 2 \\ 1 & 0 & 1 \\ 2 & 1 & 0\end{bmatrix}: the leading diagonal is 0, and the rest is 1 next to it and 2 in the corners.

  2. The sum is 4×1+2×2=84 \times 1 + 2 \times 2 = 8.

Worth noting

0 is the sum of i−ji - j without the modulus: each element cancels its mirror image.
