Question 28

MediumOriginal question

For which values of xx and yy is [2x+14y3]=[74−23−x]\begin{bmatrix} 2x + 1 & 4 \\ y & 3 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 7 & 4 \\ -2 & 3 - x \end{bmatrix}?

Options for question 28

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The top-left elements give 2x+1=72x + 1 = 7, so x=3x = 3.

  2. The bottom-right elements give 3=3−x3 = 3 - x, so x=0x = 0. One xx cannot be both, so the matrices are never equal.

Worth noting

x=3, y=−2x = 3,\ y = -2 satisfies three of the four equations; equality needs all four.
