Question 29

MediumOriginal question

If [a+ba−2c2a−bc+d]=[70−15]\begin{bmatrix} a + b & a - 2c \\ 2a - b & c + d \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 7 & 0 \\ -1 & 5 \end{bmatrix}, what is a+b+c+da + b + c + d?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. From the first column: a+b=7a + b = 7 and 2a−b=−12a - b = -1. Adding, 3a=63a = 6, so a=2a = 2 and b=5b = 5.

  2. Then a−2c=0a - 2c = 0 gives c=1c = 1, and c+d=5c + d = 5 gives d=4d = 4.

  3. So a+b+c+d=12a + b + c + d = 12.

Worth noting

1111 adds the elements on the right, which is not the sum of the unknowns.
