Question 77

HardOriginal question

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Volume V=x(24−2x)2V = x(24 - 2x)^2 for 0<x<120 < x < 12.

  2. V′=(24−2x)(24−6x)=0V' = (24 - 2x)(24 - 6x) = 0 gives x=4x = 4 (the other root, 12, leaves no sheet).

  3. At x=4x = 4 cm the volume is 4×162=10244 \times 16^2 = 1024 cm³, the largest.

Worth noting

12 cm is the other root of V′=0V' = 0; it cuts the sheet away completely.
