HardOriginal question

Two different numbers are chosen at random from 1 to 10. What is the probability that their product is even?

Options for question 54

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The product is odd only when both numbers are odd: 5C2=10{}^{5}C_2 = 10 of the 10C2=45{}^{10}C_2 = 45 pairs.

  2. So it is even with probability 1−1045=791 - \frac{10}{45} = \frac{7}{9}.

Worth noting

34\frac{3}{4} is the answer when the same number may be chosen twice, as with two dice.
