Question 52

HardOriginal question

XX takes the values 1, 2 and 3 with probabilities 0.2, pp and 0.8−p0.8 - p. If E(X)=2.2E(X) = 2.2, what is pp?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. E(X)=0.2+2p+3(0.8−p)=2.6−pE(X) = 0.2 + 2p + 3(0.8 - p) = 2.6 - p.

  2. 2.6−p=2.22.6 - p = 2.2, so p=0.4p = 0.4 (and P(X=3)=0.4P(X = 3) = 0.4).

Worth noting

Check: 0.2+0.8+1.2=2.20.2 + 0.8 + 1.2 = 2.2.
