Question 30

EasyOriginal question

What is the vector equation of the line through the point (2,−1,4)(2, -1, 4) parallel to i^+j^−2k^\hat{i} + \hat{j} - 2\hat{k}?

Options for question 30

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. A line through a⃗\vec{a} parallel to b⃗\vec{b} is r⃗=a⃗+λb⃗\vec{r} = \vec{a} + \lambda\vec{b}.

  2. Here a⃗=2i^−j^+4k^\vec{a} = 2\hat{i} - \hat{j} + 4\hat{k} and b⃗=i^+j^−2k^\vec{b} = \hat{i} + \hat{j} - 2\hat{k}.

Worth noting

Swapping a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b} gives a line through the wrong point, in the wrong direction.
