Question 103

MediumOriginal question

Which vector is perpendicular to both i^+j^\hat{i} + \hat{j} and j^+k^\hat{j} + \hat{k}?

Options for question 103

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. a⃗×b⃗\vec{a} \times \vec{b} is perpendicular to both.

  2. i^(1−0)−j^(1−0)+k^(1−0)=i^−j^+k^\hat{i}(1 - 0) - \hat{j}(1 - 0) + \hat{k}(1 - 0) = \hat{i} - \hat{j} + \hat{k}; its dot product with each is 0.

Worth noting

i^+j^+k^\hat{i} + \hat{j} + \hat{k} forgets the minus sign on the j^\hat{j} term.
