Question 110

MediumOriginal question

For non-zero vectors a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b}, ∣a⃗×b⃗∣=3 (a⃗⋅b⃗)\lvert \vec{a} \times \vec{b} \rvert = \sqrt{3}\,(\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b}). What is the angle between them?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. ∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣sin⁡θ=3∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣cos⁡θ\lvert \vec{a} \rvert \lvert \vec{b} \rvert \sin \theta = \sqrt{3}\lvert \vec{a} \rvert \lvert \vec{b} \rvert \cos \theta, so tan⁡θ=3\tan \theta = \sqrt{3}.

  2. With θ\theta in [0,π][0, \pi] and cos⁡θ>0\cos \theta > 0, θ=π3\theta = \frac{\pi}{3}.

Worth noting

π6\frac{\pi}{6} solves tan⁡θ=13\tan \theta = \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}, with the sine and cosine swapped.
