EasyOriginal question

In triangle ABCABC, DD is the midpoint of BCBC. What is AB→+AC→\overrightarrow{AB} + \overrightarrow{AC}?

Options for question 34

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Taking AA as the origin, DD is the midpoint of BCBC: AD→=AB→+AC→2\overrightarrow{AD} = \frac{\overrightarrow{AB} + \overrightarrow{AC}}{2}.

  2. So AB→+AC→=2AD→\overrightarrow{AB} + \overrightarrow{AC} = 2\overrightarrow{AD}, twice the median.

Worth noting

AD→\overrightarrow{AD} forgets the half in the midpoint formula; the sum is twice the median.
