Question 87

HardOriginal question

a⃗+b⃗+c⃗=0⃗\vec{a} + \vec{b} + \vec{c} = \vec{0}, with ∣a⃗∣=3\lvert \vec{a} \rvert = 3, ∣b⃗∣=8\lvert \vec{b} \rvert = 8 and ∣c⃗∣=7\lvert \vec{c} \rvert = 7. What is the angle between a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. c⃗=−(a⃗+b⃗)\vec{c} = -(\vec{a} + \vec{b}), so ∣c⃗∣2=∣a⃗∣2+2a⃗⋅b⃗+∣b⃗∣2\lvert \vec{c} \rvert^{2} = \lvert \vec{a} \rvert^{2} + 2\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} + \lvert \vec{b} \rvert^{2}: 49=9+2a⃗⋅b⃗+6449 = 9 + 2\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} + 64.

  2. a⃗⋅b⃗=−12\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} = -12, so cos⁡θ=−123×8=−12\cos \theta = \frac{-12}{3 \times 8} = -\frac{1}{2} and θ=2π3\theta = \frac{2\pi}{3}.

Worth noting

π3\frac{\pi}{3} is the angle inside the triangle the vectors form head to tail; the angle between a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b} is its supplement.
