Question 90

HardOriginal question

a⃗=λi^+2j^−k^\vec{a} = \lambda\hat{i} + 2\hat{j} - \hat{k} and b⃗=2i^−j^+3k^\vec{b} = 2\hat{i} - \hat{j} + 3\hat{k}, with λ>0\lambda > 0. For which λ\lambda is a⃗+b⃗\vec{a} + \vec{b} perpendicular to a⃗−b⃗\vec{a} - \vec{b}?

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. (a⃗+b⃗)⋅(a⃗−b⃗)=∣a⃗∣2−∣b⃗∣2(\vec{a} + \vec{b}) \cdot (\vec{a} - \vec{b}) = \lvert \vec{a} \rvert^{2} - \lvert \vec{b} \rvert^{2}, so the two are perpendicular exactly when ∣a⃗∣=∣b⃗∣\lvert \vec{a} \rvert = \lvert \vec{b} \rvert.

  2. λ2+4+1=4+1+9\lambda^{2} + 4 + 1 = 4 + 1 + 9, so λ2=9\lambda^{2} = 9, and λ>0\lambda > 0 gives λ=3\lambda = 3.

Worth noting

9 is λ2\lambda^{2}; λ\lambda is its square root.
