Vectors · Question 112 of 125

If θ is the angle between a and b, what is tan θ?

Question 112

MediumOriginal question

A parallelogram has adjacent sides a⃗=2i^+j^+2k^\vec{a} = 2\hat{i} + \hat{j} + 2\hat{k} and b⃗=2i^+3j^−2k^\vec{b} = 2\hat{i} + 3\hat{j} - 2\hat{k}.

If θ\theta is the angle between a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b}, what is tan⁡θ\tan \theta?

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. tan⁡θ=∣a⃗×b⃗∣a⃗⋅b⃗\tan \theta = \frac{\lvert \vec{a} \times \vec{b} \rvert}{\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b}}, since ∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣\lvert \vec{a} \rvert \lvert \vec{b} \rvert cancels from sin⁡θ\sin \theta and cos⁡θ\cos \theta.

  2. a⃗⋅b⃗=4+3−4=3\vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} = 4 + 3 - 4 = 3, so tan⁡θ=123=4\tan \theta = \frac{12}{3} = 4.

Worth noting

14\frac{1}{4} puts the scalar product on top, which gives cot⁡θ\cot \theta.
