CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Eight years ago the ages were 4k4k and 3k3k; four years from now they are 4k+124k + 12 and 3k+123k + 12.

  2. 4k+123k+12=76\frac{4k + 12}{3k + 12} = \frac{7}{6}, so 24k+72=21k+8424k + 72 = 21k + 84 and k=4k = 4.

  3. Eight years ago: 16 and 12. Now: 24 and 20.

  4. Sum now = 24+20=4424 + 20 = 44 years.

Worth noting

28 years is the sum eight years ago and 52 years the sum four years ahead. From eight years ago to four years ahead is a 12-year jump for EACH person.
