CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Let them be xx and x+2x + 2: x2+(x+2)2=394x^2 + (x + 2)^2 = 394.

  2. 2x2+4x+4=3942x^2 + 4x + 4 = 394, so x2+2x−195=0x^2 + 2x - 195 = 0.

  3. (x+15)(x−13)=0(x + 15)(x - 13) = 0; positive root x=13x = 13.

  4. The numbers are 13 and 15; check 169+225=394169 + 225 = 394.

Worth noting

13 is the smaller root. Shortcut: 394÷2=197394 \div 2 = 197, and the two squares straddle it (169 and 225).
