CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Let the numbers be yy and y+4y + 4: 1y−1y+4=4y(y+4)=124\frac{1}{y} - \frac{1}{y + 4} = \frac{4}{y(y + 4)} = \frac{1}{24}.

  2. So y(y+4)=96y(y + 4) = 96, i.e. y2+4y−96=0y^2 + 4y - 96 = 0.

  3. (y+12)(y−8)=0(y + 12)(y - 8) = 0; positive root y=8y = 8.

  4. The numbers are 8 and 12, so the sum is 20.

Worth noting

12 is only the larger number. The product 96 comes straight from 4×244 \times 24, which is the quickest route.
