CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Divisor − remainder is the same each time: 8−5=12−9=15−12=38 - 5 = 12 - 9 = 15 - 12 = 3.

  2. So the number is 3 less than a common multiple of 8, 12 and 15.

  3. LCM⁡(8,12,15)=120\operatorname{LCM}(8, 12, 15) = 120, so the least number is 120−3=117120 - 3 = 117.

  4. Check: 117=8×14+5=12×9+9=15×7+12117 = 8 \times 14 + 5 = 12 \times 9 + 9 = 15 \times 7 + 12.

Worth noting

123 adds the gap of 3 instead of subtracting it.
