Question 23

MediumOriginal question

In triangle ABC, AB=ACAB = AC and ∠A=36∘\angle A = 36^\circ. A point D on side AC is chosen so that BD=BCBD = BC. What is ∠DBC\angle DBC?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. AB=ACAB = AC, so ∠ABC=∠ACB=(180∘−36∘)÷2=72∘\angle ABC = \angle ACB = (180^\circ - 36^\circ) \div 2 = 72^\circ.

  2. In triangle BDC, BD=BCBD = BC, so ∠BDC=∠BCD=72∘\angle BDC = \angle BCD = 72^\circ.

  3. ∠DBC=180∘−72∘−72∘=36∘\angle DBC = 180^\circ - 72^\circ - 72^\circ = 36^\circ.

Worth noting

72° is ∠ABC\angle ABC, the whole angle at B. Only part of it lies inside triangle BDC.
