Question 24

MediumOriginal question

In triangle ABC, ∠A=70∘\angle A = 70^\circ. The bisectors of ∠B\angle B and ∠C\angle C meet at I. What is ∠BIC\angle BIC?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. ∠B+∠C=180∘−70∘=110∘\angle B + \angle C = 180^\circ - 70^\circ = 110^\circ, so half of each together = 55°.

  2. In triangle BIC, ∠BIC=180∘−55∘=125∘\angle BIC = 180^\circ - 55^\circ = 125^\circ.

  3. Shortcut: ∠BIC=90∘+12∠A=90∘+35∘=125∘\angle BIC = 90^\circ + \frac{1}{2}\angle A = 90^\circ + 35^\circ = 125^\circ.

Worth noting

55° is ∠IBC+∠ICB\angle IBC + \angle ICB, and 110° is ∠B+∠C\angle B + \angle C. The angle at I is what is left of 180°.
