Question 59

MediumOriginal question

A well of diameter 7 m is dug 20 m deep. The earth taken out is spread evenly over a rectangular plot 70 m long and 22 m wide. By how much does the level of the plot rise? Take π=227\pi = \frac{22}{7}.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Earth dug out = 227×3.5×3.5×20=770\frac{22}{7} \times 3.5 \times 3.5 \times 20 = 770 m³.

  2. Plot area = 70×22=1,54070 \times 22 = 1{,}540 m².

  3. Rise = 770÷1,540=0.5770 \div 1{,}540 = 0.5 m=50m = 50 cm.

Worth noting

200 cm uses 7 m as the radius. 5 cm slips a decimal when changing 0.5 m into centimetres.
