Question 60

MediumOriginal question

A block of metal 5.5 cm × 10 cm × 3.5 cm is melted and made into coins, each 1.4 cm in diameter and 0.2 cm thick. How many coins are made? Take π=227\pi = \frac{22}{7}.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Block volume = 5.5×10×3.5=192.55.5 \times 10 \times 3.5 = 192.5 cm³.

  2. One coin is a short cylinder: 227×0.7×0.7×0.2=0.308\frac{22}{7} \times 0.7 \times 0.7 \times 0.2 = 0.308 cm³.

  3. Coins = 192.5÷0.308=625192.5 \div 0.308 = 625.

Worth noting

2,500 halves the diameter twice (radius 0.35 cm). 6,250 takes the thickness as 0.02 cm, and 125 takes it as 1 cm.
