CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Each operation keeps 4860=45\frac{48}{60} = \frac{4}{5} of the milk.

  2. Milk = 60×(45)2=38.460 \times \left(\frac{4}{5}\right)^2 = 38.4 litres; water = 60−38.4=21.660 - 38.4 = 21.6 litres.

  3. Milk : water = 38.4:21.6=384:216=16:938.4 : 21.6 = 384 : 216 = 16 : 9.

Worth noting

Shortcut: milk fraction = (4/5)(4/5)² = 16/2516/25, so milk : water = 16:(25−16)=16:916 : (25 - 16) = 16 : 9. 3:23 : 2 comes from subtracting 12 litres of milk twice; 4:14 : 1 is the ratio after one operation.
