CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Milk at first = 34×40=30\frac{3}{4} \times 40 = 30 litres.

  2. Each operation keeps 40−840=45\frac{40 - 8}{40} = \frac{4}{5} of the milk.

  3. Milk left = 30×(45)2=19.230 \times \left(\frac{4}{5}\right)^2 = 19.2 litres, so water = 40−19.2=20.840 - 19.2 = 20.8 litres.

  4. Water % = 20.840×100=52%\frac{20.8}{40} \times 100 = 52\%.

Worth noting

The formula applies to the milk even though the can did not start as pure milk. 48% is the milk percentage; 40% is the water after only one operation; 55% subtracts 6 litres of milk each time.
