Mixtures & Alligation · Question 59 of 60

Question 59

HardOriginal question

Mixture A has milk and water in the ratio 3:13 : 1 and mixture B has them in the ratio 1:11 : 1. How many litres of A must be mixed with 18 litres of B to get a mixture with milk and water in the ratio 2:12 : 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Milk fractions: A = 34\frac{3}{4}, B = 12\frac{1}{2}, target = 23\frac{2}{3}.

  2. A:B=(23−12):(34−23)=16:112=2:1A : B = \left(\frac{2}{3} - \frac{1}{2}\right) : \left(\frac{3}{4} - \frac{2}{3}\right) = \frac{1}{6} : \frac{1}{12} = 2 : 1.

  3. A = 2×18=362 \times 18 = 36 litres.

Worth noting

9 litres comes from reversing the ratio. Check: milk = 27+9=3627 + 9 = 36, water = 9+9=189 + 9 = 18, and 36:18=2:136 : 18 = 2 : 1.
