CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. 40×(1−x40)2=25.640 \times \left(1 - \frac{x}{40}\right)^2 = 25.6, so (1−x40)2=0.64\left(1 - \frac{x}{40}\right)^2 = 0.64.

  2. 1−x40=0.81 - \frac{x}{40} = 0.8, so x40=0.2\frac{x}{40} = 0.2.

  3. x=0.2×40=8x = 0.2 \times 40 = 8 litres.

Worth noting

14.4 litres is the total juice lost (40−25.6)(40 - 25.6), as if there were only one operation. 12.8 litres halves 25.6 instead of taking a square root.
