Question 45

EasyOriginal question

Simplify 50+18\sqrt{50} + \sqrt{18}.

Options for question 45

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. 50=25×2=52\sqrt{50} = \sqrt{25 \times 2} = 5\sqrt{2} and 18=9×2=32\sqrt{18} = \sqrt{9 \times 2} = 3\sqrt{2}.

  2. Like surds add like terms: 52+32=825\sqrt{2} + 3\sqrt{2} = 8\sqrt{2}.

Worth noting

a+b\sqrt{a} + \sqrt{b} is not a+b\sqrt{a + b}: 68=217\sqrt{68} = 2\sqrt{17} is the tempting wrong answer. Multiplying the coefficients 5 and 3 gives 15215\sqrt{2}.
