Question 27

HardOriginal question

Using integration, what is the area of the triangle bounded by the lines y=2xy = 2x, y=x2y = \frac{x}{2} and x+y=6x + y = 6?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Corners: the first two lines meet at the origin; x+y=6x + y = 6 meets y=2xy = 2x at (2,4)(2, 4) and y=x2y = \frac{x}{2} at (4,2)(4, 2).

  2. The upper side changes at x=2x = 2: ∫02(2x−x2)dx+∫24(6−x−x2)dx\int_0^{2} \left(2x - \frac{x}{2}\right)dx + \int_2^{4} \left(6 - x - \frac{x}{2}\right)dx.

  3. 3+3=63 + 3 = 6 square units.

Worth noting

3 stops at x=2x = 2, where the upper side changes from y=2xy = 2x to x+y=6x + y = 6; the second piece is left out.
