Area of Bounded Regions · Question 41 of 115

Question 41

MediumOriginal question

The region inside the circle x2+y2=10x^{2} + y^{2} = 10 and above the line y=1y = 1 is found with vertical strips. Between which limits of xx is the integral taken?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The line meets the circle where x2+1=10x^{2} + 1 = 10, so x=±3x = \pm 3.

  2. Between them each strip runs from y=1y = 1 up to y=10−x2y = \sqrt{10 - x^{2}}: ∫−33(10−x2−1)dx\int_{-3}^{3} \left(\sqrt{10 - x^{2}} - 1\right)dx.

Worth noting

±10\pm\sqrt{10} are where the circle meets the xx-axis; above y=1y = 1 the region stops where the line meets the circle.
