Question 93

EasyOriginal question

Which integral gives the area of the part of the ellipse x216+y225=1\frac{x^{2}}{16} + \frac{y^{2}}{25} = 1 above the xx-axis?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Above the xx-axis, y=51−x216=5416−x2y = 5\sqrt{1 - \frac{x^{2}}{16}} = \frac{5}{4}\sqrt{16 - x^{2}}, for −4≤x≤4-4 \le x \le 4.

  2. So the area is 54∫−4416−x2 dx=54×8π=10π\frac{5}{4}\int_{-4}^{4} \sqrt{16 - x^{2}}\,dx = \frac{5}{4} \times 8\pi = 10\pi, half of π×4×5\pi \times 4 \times 5.

Worth noting

45\frac{4}{5} solves for yy with the semi-axes swapped; the 5 under y2y^{2} goes on top.
