Area of Bounded Regions · Question 114 of 115

Question 114

HardOriginal question

For a,b>0a, b > 0, what is the area of the smaller region bounded by the ellipse x2a2+y2b2=1\frac{x^{2}}{a^{2}} + \frac{y^{2}}{b^{2}} = 1 and the line xa+yb=1\frac{x}{a} + \frac{y}{b} = 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. The line joins (a,0)(a, 0) and (0,b)(0, b), both on the ellipse, so the smaller region lies in the first quadrant between the arc and the chord.

  2. ∫0a[baa2−x2−b(1−xa)]dx=πab4−ab2\int_0^{a} \left[\frac{b}{a}\sqrt{a^{2} - x^{2}} - b\left(1 - \frac{x}{a}\right)\right]dx = \frac{\pi ab}{4} - \frac{ab}{2}.

  3. =(π−2)ab4= \frac{(\pi - 2)ab}{4} square units.

Worth noting

πab4\frac{\pi ab}{4} is the whole quarter of the ellipse; the triangle under the chord, ab2\frac{ab}{2}, has to come off.
