Area of Bounded Regions · Question 103 of 115

Question 103

MediumOriginal question

The region inside the ellipse x264+y216=1\frac{x^{2}}{64} + \frac{y^{2}}{16} = 1 and above the line y=2y = 2 is found with vertical strips. Between which limits of xx is the integral taken?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. On y=2y = 2: x264=1−416=34\frac{x^{2}}{64} = 1 - \frac{4}{16} = \frac{3}{4}, so x2=48x^{2} = 48 and x=±43x = \pm 4\sqrt{3}.

  2. Between these the arc y=1264−x2y = \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{64 - x^{2}} lies above the line: ∫−4343(1264−x2−2)dx\int_{-4\sqrt{3}}^{4\sqrt{3}} \left(\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{64 - x^{2}} - 2\right)dx.

Worth noting

±8\pm 8 are where the ellipse meets the xx-axis; above y=2y = 2 the region is narrower and ends where the line meets the ellipse.
