Conditional Probability & Bayes' Theorem · Question 115 of 125

Question 115

HardOriginal question

A condition affects 1% of people. A test detects it in 90% of those who have it, and wrongly shows it in 10% of those who do not. A person tests positive. What is the probability that they have the condition?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. Let DD be having the condition and TT a positive test: P(T)=0.01×0.9+0.99×0.1=0.009+0.099=0.108P(T) = 0.01 \times 0.9 + 0.99 \times 0.1 = 0.009 + 0.099 = 0.108.

  2. P(D∣T)=0.0090.108=112P(D \mid T) = \frac{0.009}{0.108} = \frac{1}{12}.

Worth noting

0.9 is the chance of a positive test for someone who has it, not the chance of having it after a positive test.
