Conditional Probability & Bayes' Theorem · Question 27 of 125

Question 27

HardOriginal question

P(A)=0.5P(A) = 0.5, P(B)=0.3P(B) = 0.3 and P(A∩B)=0.2P(A \cap B) = 0.2. What is P(A′∣B′)P(A' \mid B')?

Options for question 27

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. P(A∪B)=0.5+0.3−0.2=0.6P(A \cup B) = 0.5 + 0.3 - 0.2 = 0.6, so P(A′∩B′)=1−0.6=0.4P(A' \cap B') = 1 - 0.6 = 0.4.

  2. P(B′)=1−0.3=0.7P(B') = 1 - 0.3 = 0.7, and P(A′∣B′)=0.40.7=47P(A' \mid B') = \frac{0.4}{0.7} = \frac{4}{7}.

Worth noting

13=1−0.20.3\frac{1}{3} = 1 - \frac{0.2}{0.3} is P(A′∣B)P(A' \mid B): it takes the complement of AA but keeps BB as the condition.
