Continuity & Differentiability · Question 22 of 125

Question 22

MediumOriginal question

Read the two statements and choose the correct option.

I. If lim⁡x→a−f(x)=f(a)\lim_{x \to a^{-}} f(x) = f(a), then ff is continuous at x=ax = a.

II. If ff is continuous at x=ax = a, then lim⁡h→0f(a+h)=f(a)\lim_{h \to 0} f(a + h) = f(a).

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. I is false: f(x)=xf(x) = x for x≤1x \le 1 and x+1x + 1 for x>1x > 1 has left limit 1=f(1)1 = f(1) but right limit 2.

  2. II is true: lim⁡h→0f(a+h)\lim_{h \to 0} f(a + h) is lim⁡x→af(x)\lim_{x \to a} f(x) written with x=a+hx = a + h, and continuity makes it f(a)f(a).

Worth noting

Continuity needs both one-sided limits to equal f(a)f(a); one side is not enough.
