CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. By symmetry the area is 4 times the part in the first quadrant: 4∫03239−x2 dx4\int_0^3 \frac{2}{3}\sqrt{9 - x^2}\,dx.

  2. ∫039−x2 dx\int_0^3 \sqrt{9 - x^2}\,dx is a quarter circle of radius 3, 9π4\frac{9\pi}{4}, so the area is 4⋅23⋅9π4=6π4 \cdot \frac{2}{3} \cdot \frac{9\pi}{4} = 6\pi, that is πab\pi ab with a=3a = 3, b=2b = 2.

Worth noting

36π36\pi uses a2a^2 and b2b^2, the denominators, instead of a=3a = 3 and b=2b = 2.
