Question 70

HardOriginal question

What is the total area between y=sin⁡xy = \sin x and the xx-axis from x=0x = 0 to x=2πx = 2\pi?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The curve crosses the axis at x=πx = \pi: above it on (0,π)(0, \pi), below it on (π,2π)(\pi, 2\pi). Take the two parts separately.

  2. ∫0πsin⁡x dx=2\int_0^{\pi} \sin x\,dx = 2 and ∣∫π2πsin⁡x dx∣=2\left|\int_{\pi}^{2\pi} \sin x\,dx\right| = 2, so the total area is 4 square units.

Worth noting

0 is the single integral from 0 to 2π2\pi, in which the two parts cancel.
