Question 56

MediumOriginal question

For the curve x=t2+1x = t^{2} + 1, y=t3−3ty = t^{3} - 3t, at which values of tt is the tangent horizontal?

Options for question 56

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The tangent is horizontal where dydx=0\frac{dy}{dx} = 0: dydt=0\frac{dy}{dt} = 0 while dxdt≠0\frac{dx}{dt} \ne 0.

  2. 3t2−3=03t^{2} - 3 = 0 gives t=±1t = \pm 1, and there dxdt=2t≠0\frac{dx}{dt} = 2t \ne 0.

Worth noting

At t=0t = 0 it is dxdt\frac{dx}{dt} that is 0: the tangent there is vertical, not horizontal. t=±3t = \pm\sqrt{3} is where y=0y = 0.
