Question 45

HardOriginal question

What is dydx\frac{dy}{dx} for y=cos⁡−1(1−x21+x2)y = \cos^{-1}\left(\frac{1 - x^{2}}{1 + x^{2}}\right), 0<x<10 < x < 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Put x=tan⁡θx = \tan \theta: 1−tan⁡2θ1+tan⁡2θ=cos⁡2θ\frac{1 - \tan^{2} \theta}{1 + \tan^{2} \theta} = \cos 2\theta, so the function is 2θ=2tan⁡−1x2\theta = 2\tan^{-1} x.

  2. So dydx=2x2+1\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{2}{x^{2} + 1}.

Worth noting

−21+x2-\frac{2}{1 + x^{2}} keeps the minus sign of cos⁡−1\cos^{-1}, but after the substitution the function is 2tan⁡−1x2\tan^{-1} x.
