Question 115

HardOriginal question

A curve passes through (0,3)(0, 3), and its slope at every point (x,y)(x, y) is y−2xy - 2x. What is yy on the curve when x=1x = 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. dydx−y=−2x\frac{dy}{dx} - y = -2x has the factor e−xe^{-x}: ye−x=∫−2xe−x dx=2(x+1)e−x+Cye^{-x} = \int -2xe^{-x}\,dx = 2(x + 1)e^{-x} + C.

  2. So y=2x+2+Cexy = 2x + 2 + Ce^{x}; at (0,3)(0, 3), 2+C=32 + C = 3, so C=1C = 1.

  3. At x=1x = 1: y=2+2+e=4+ey = 2 + 2 + e = 4 + e.

Worth noting

5e5e comes from y=2x−2+Cexy = 2x - 2 + Ce^{x}, a sign slip in ∫−2xe−x dx\int -2xe^{-x}\,dx; then C=5C = 5.
