Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 114 of 120

Question 114

HardOriginal question

What is the general solution of dydx+ytan⁡x=sec⁡x\frac{dy}{dx} + y\tan x = \sec x?

Options for question 114

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. The factor is e∫tan⁡x dx=sec⁡xe^{\int \tan x\,dx} = \sec x: ddx(ysec⁡x)=sec⁡2x\frac{d}{dx}(y\sec x) = \sec^{2}x.

  2. ysec⁡x=tan⁡x+Cy\sec x = \tan x + C, so y=sin⁡x+Ccos⁡xy = \sin x + C\cos x.

Worth noting

tan⁡x+Ccos⁡x\tan x + C\cos x divides only the constant by sec⁡x\sec x, not tan⁡x\tan x.
