Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 69 of 74

Question 69

MediumOriginal question

f(x)=x3−kxf(x) = x^3 - kx is increasing on R\mathbb{R}. Which values can kk take?

Options for question 69

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=3x2−kf'(x) = 3x^2 - k must be ≥0\ge 0 for all xx; its least value is −k-k, at x=0x = 0.

  2. So −k≥0-k \ge 0, that is k≤0k \le 0.

Worth noting

k=0k = 0 gives x3x^3, which is increasing, but every negative kk works as well.
