Inverse Trigonometric Functions · Question 8 of 120

Question 8

EasyOriginal question

What is the range of f(x)=sin⁡−1x+cos⁡−1xf(x) = \sin^{-1} x + \cos^{-1} x?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. sin⁡−1x+cos⁡−1x=π2\sin^{-1} x + \cos^{-1} x = \frac{\pi}{2} at every xx of the domain, −1≤x≤1-1 \le x \le 1.

  2. So ff takes the single value π2\frac{\pi}{2}: its range is {π2}\left\{\frac{\pi}{2}\right\}.

Worth noting

[−π2,3π2]\left[-\frac{\pi}{2}, \frac{3\pi}{2}\right] adds the two ranges as if the terms could be chosen apart; they move together, one up as the other goes down.
