CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. E(X)=0.9E(X) = 0.9 and E(X2)=0×0.3+1×0.5+4×0.2=1.3E(X^{2}) = 0 \times 0.3 + 1 \times 0.5 + 4 \times 0.2 = 1.3.

  2. Var(X)=E(X2)−[E(X)]2=1.3−0.81=0.49\text{Var}(X) = E(X^{2}) - [E(X)]^{2} = 1.3 - 0.81 = 0.49.

Worth noting

1.3 is E(X2)E(X^{2}); the square of the mean still has to be taken away.
